Silva retooled existing sponges, experimenting with various shapes and sizes to fit her needs. For example, in 1928 beautician Marjorie Stewart Joyner patented her permanent wave machine which made curling women’s hair more efficient. Silva’s work as a technological innovator connects her to other women in history who developed creative solutions to problems in their industries. She did this with sponges, but sometimes their shape meant they were imprecise or could not cover hard-to-get-to areas. Silva needed an efficient and precise way to apply makeup. And using the machine meant taking actors off set, which slowed production. Silva mastered airbrushing makeup application, but soon discovered that, after hours of shooting, actors ended up with a ton of makeup on their faces.

Filming in HD magnified any flaws or blemishes on performers’ skin or makeup, pushing Silva and other makeup artists to adjust and try new techniques. After learning the principles of makeup application, Silva parlayed those skills into another job opportunity-doing makeup on the numerous TV and film sets of Los Angeles.
